Top SEO FAQ – What is a Backlink?

April 3rd, 2010

A backlink, also known as one way link or inbound link is the term used when any website, other than your own domain, places a clickable hyperlink leading to your website from their own. This is often referred to as off-page SEO. (search engine optimization).

The most desirable backlink is one that uses keyword anchor text instead of your website URL for the link. Anchor text simply means that the web address is linked with HTML code to your keyword phrase. An example of anchor text can be seen when a site has a “click here” or “Read More…” clickable link. For the best results though, you should use your keywords as this will tell the search engines that the link leads to a website about that topic.

Whenever possible, you should create your own code to be placed on other websites for backlinks. You know which keywords you are trying to rank your site for so you will be the best one to ensure the person linking back to you will get it right if you do the work for them. Make it easy for people to link to you by providing your backlink code within your website that they can just copy and paste in their website.

If you are doing the backlinks yourself, you can get high quality links through placing your anchor text links in forum signatures, blog comments, social marketing profile pages such as Twitter and Facebook. Make sure you take advantage of any chance available to put your link in anchor text format. This will greatly improve your search engine placement for your desired keyword phrase.

This is just one way you can improve your search engine placement and promote your website through off page SEO. I have much more information available on my website.

You Can Easily Give Your Keywords Link Juice From Internal Links to Rank Higher in SERP

March 29th, 2010

What is Link Juice?

Some call it Link Juice, others call it Link Love but it is just a fun way of referring to the SEO benefits of linking two web pages together. Whether the links are within the same domain or from external sources, there are always benefits from an SEO standpoint when you create a link to anything.

It is sometimes tougher to get off-page links, or links on other websites, so it is to your utmost advantage to do everything you can within your own website to boost the power of your keywords. Internal linking is one way to do this. Because you control what is on your webpages, you control the amount of on-page SEO you do. To neglect this important aspect of SEO may mean that you do not rank as highly in the Search engines for your keywords as you would like.

How to Use Internal Links To The Best Advantage

To get the most SEO punch from your internal links you should use anchor text links within the context of your blog or website content any time your keyword is used. Let’s use gardening as an example. You have a gardening website and you have a product about container gardening that will make you money when anyone purchases it. Naturally, you would want to rank higher for the keyword “container gardening” since that is the product that will put money in your bank.

You want the search engines to recognize that the container gardening offer page is the most important page on your website. So you write a series of 20 articles about gardening and within those articles, you place an anchor text link to the money page every time you use the word container gardening within those articles. The search engine will then pick up the fact that there are 20 links within your site all leading to that page and will know that it is the most important page of your website and rank your website higher in the SERP for that keyword.

Choose one or two keywords that you want to rank highly for and use the internal links to tell the search engines what you want and they will respond. The biggest mistake a marketer can make is not guiding the search engines where YOU want them to go.

This is just one way to get your site listed higher in the search engines. I have much more information to share with you that will help your business get better search engine positioning.

Are More Followers Always Better For Your Business on Twitter Or Are You Just Wasting Your Time?

March 25th, 2010

First let’s talk about why you want to narrow the field of your Twitter followers. For the sake of this article I am going to say you are in the gardening industry and ship plants and gardening supplies within the USA only. Does it make sense to have people from Europe on your business Twitter followers? No, not really. You can’t do business with them, and since your main goal on Twitter is to build a relationship with potential customers, it doesn’t seem like a good use of Twitter to clutter up your account with people that will never do business with you.

Gathering Twitter followers just for the sake of having followers is a true waste of resources. You only have so many hours in a day and you should use those hours wisely. Having to sift through a pile of irrelevant Tweets makes your job of social marketing much tougher. Your goal should be to focus on your specific target audience. So how do you go about doing that?

First, you must find the people within the demographics of your target market. In this case, people who live in the USA who enjoy gardening. I use a free service at buzzom.com. This allows me to find followers based on my keywords. Yes, you can do this within Twitter itself, but it is very, very time consuming. Buzzom allows me to do it at a much quicker pace. Every day, I sign into my Buzzom account and do a keyword search for Twitter users within my niche. With one click I can follow 50 at a time. I build up my list slowly as I do not want Twitter to ban my account for unusual activity. Add 50 per day to start, then up it to 100 per day as your Twitter following increases. Within a very short amount of time, you will find you have a pretty decent following because a large number of the people you choose to follow will reciprocate and follow you in return. You can use the TwitIt feature within Buzzom to “flush” out the people who do not follow you every now and again to keep your follow/following ratios within a reasonable level.

Next, you can reach your market within Twitter by making sure you have your keywords within your profile and your Tweets. Using hash marks is a good way to have your Tweets found by people within your market. To do this, you just type #gardening at the end of each Tweet you do about gardening. This will help searchers find you, the search engines to find you and you will notice down the right hand side of your Twitter page a list of #topics.

By doing those two things, you will find your Twitter account to be more productive and more profitable as you are ony putting your efforts into finding potential customers instead of just collecting followers.

As you might guess, these are just two ways to use social media more effectively. There is much, much more information you need to make better use of your social marketing time and efforts. I go into more details on these and other marketing subjects on my website.

How to Build Your Opt – In List With Google AdWords

March 20th, 2010

The challenge of building a targeted email subscriber list haunts many aspiring marketers. You have two options. Build your list quickly by spending money on acquiring prospective customers. Increase your subscriber count slowly, through expanding your existing marketing base. When attempting to expand your business quickly, Google AdWords presents an attractive alternative to acquiring opt in subscribers.

Google offers an advertising program known as AdWords, where you will create an advertisement, and then pay per click for each visitor that comes to your site. When someone searches for a particular keyword in the Google search engine, your ad will show up on the top or to the side of the results.

So how does this benefit your list building efforts?

When a visitor clicks your advertisement, they will be directed to your page, meaning that you have an excellent opportunity to collect their information, through the use of an email subscription box.

Beware! When using this service, there are many pitfalls that can quickly eat through your advertising budget. The difference, between following and not following these tips, can mean that you will pay ten times as much in order to gain an email subscriber.

Google AdWords utilizes quality scores, in order to ensure that people who visit their search results are not redirected to junk pages. Junk advertisements could decrease the relevancy of their search engine results, sending potential customers to competitors such as Yahoo Search or Bing.

The Google quality score ranges from one to ten, with ten being a perfect score. Generally speaking, a higher quality score results in significantly lower costs per opt in list conversion.

Here are some tips to lower the price of your opt in conversion rate costs. Handbags will be used as the keyword example.

1. Try to register a domain name with the keyword, which you are trying to advertise. For example, handbagshop.com will give you an increased quality score for the word handbag.

2. Write keyword specific content. Google does not appreciate spam landing pages. Attempt to write at least 400 words of specific content about the keyword.

3. Bid on less common keywords. Competition is high for single word terms. Try to expand your keyword research. Instead of bidding on the keyword handbag, try longer terms such as designer handbags, purple purse, or fashion bags. The more specific your keywords, the less you will pay per conversion rate for an email list subscriber. In addition, highly targeted customers are more likely to purchase goods and services from you.

4. For each of these obscure keywords, create an individual page with the keyword as the title. For example, when bidding on the keyword fashion bags, write a 400 word article with the title as fashion bags.

5. Utilize negative keywords. If a prospective opt in email list subscriber uses one of these keywords in their internet search, they will not see your advertisement. For example, someone searching for free handbags is not likely to purchase your product, and your advertising money has been wasted.

6. Bid high at first. You can always lower your bids later on, as your quality score improves. Higher bids mean increased rankings in the advertising algorithms. Google AdWords appreciates high click through rates on their advertisements, and they will reward you with lower bid prices. If you initially start with low bids, raising your quality score is much more difficult.

To build their opt in email lists, many entrepreneurs have utilized Google AdWords with great effectiveness. While learning the ins and outs of pay per click list building, there exists a steep learning curve. Following these tips should allow you to receive a high conversion rate at an inexpensive price.

There are many more strategies and techniques you can use to capture leads and build your opt-in mailing list.
